For the days you don’t want to read a whole ass series but need a quick escape, fantasy standalone novels can be your savior. Standalone books particularly in fantasy are pretty risky as they have to captivate you with their magical world while showing character development and appropriate world-building in just a single book. So, when the authors manage to maintain a balance of all of the elements in their books, these books become worth a read!

That’s why I have made a list of five amazing fantasy standalone for the times when reading a series seems like a chore;)

1) Sorcery of Thorns

Elisabeth Scrivener, raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, has grown up among the tools of sorcery, such as the magical grimoires that whisper secrets and if provoked turn into grotesque monsters of ink and leather. She has always dreamed of being a warden, protecting the kingdom from their powers.

But one day, a grimoire is provoked by some intruder, and to prevent it from breaking havoc in nearby villages she has to kill the most dangerous grimoire. But in doing so, she is accused of releasing it in the first place. And without any witnesses to prove her point she has to go to the capital with the sorcerer, Nataniel Thorn, to face justice. She has always known that sorcerers are evil, but after knowing Nathaniel, his strange servant, and the order in the capital, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy. Along the way, Elisabeth discovers she has a power she would have never guessed and what she has learned till now has not been all true.

The beauty of this book is that it’s about books and magical libraries. The characters are a cherry on top with their amazing personalities and relationships with each other. It’s one of my all-time favorites, highly recommend Sorcery of Thorns!

2)To kill a Kingdom

To kill a Kingdom is the perfect slow-burn romance between a Pirate Prince, Elian, and a Siren Princess, Lira. She is on a mission to take Prince Elian’s heart and deliver it to the Sea Queen, all in her human form. For doing so she promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for good—But can he trust her?

Full of tricks and lies at every turn, this one is a captivating read!

3) The Night Circus

Night Circus is a spellbinding story narrated from multiple points of view, about two star-crossed magicians who compete behind the scenes of a Circus, called Le Cirque des Rêves, that is only open at night. This is a whimsical tale of magic and exquisite romance with its dream-like and engaging narration.

4) Entreat me

Entreat me is a steamy retelling of ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ with a strong and confident female lead, Louvaen Duenda, and Ballard of a decrepit castle, Ketach Tor, who is afflicted by a centuries-old curse. She meets him as she follows to rescue her younger sister who’s gone with the son of Ballard. Soon, she discovers the secrets of that household, including threatening sorcerers and dark magic. Now, she must decide if loving him will ultimately save him or destroy him!

Entreat me with its strong heroine, steamy sequences and beautiful couples make for an entertaining read.

5) House of Salt & Sorrows

House of Salt And Sorrows is the creepy story of twelve sisters rumored to be cursed, living in a manor by the sea with their father, and stepmother. Once they were twelve but now with the mysterious death of each of her sisters, Annaleigh gets involved with a stranger, who has secrets of his own, to uncover the truth behind their deaths. Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, for Annaleigh, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family—before it claims her next.

This spooky retelling of ‘The Twelve Dancing Princesses is sure to keep you up at night!
