How Books Became My Best Companions!

Books! Books! and More Books!

Books have truly transformed my life. I know, it may sound like a cliché, but it’s undeniably true. Reading has not only shifted my mindset but has also illuminated my personality. I feel immensely grateful whenever I reflect on the clarity and positive changes that books have brought into my life.

Let me take you through my reading journey. To begin, I wasn’t always an avid reader.

It all started with a few books I stumbled upon in my high school library. I vividly recall borrowing a Sherlock Holmes book one day, intending to read just a chapter or two before getting some rest. Little did I know, the universe had different plans for me (it’s starting to sound like a love story, isn’t it?). I was utterly captivated. The story was so enthralling that I found myself reading until 3 am—I simply couldn’t put that book down!

What surprised me most was the sheer amount of time I willingly spent reading. It was not only enjoyable but also allowed me to visualize the story in my mind’s eye. At the time, I had thought of reading as a purely intellectual activity, and I didn’t consider myself particularly smart.

Now, you can probably guess what happened next. This experience ignited my passion for reading, and I eagerly delved into more adventure and thriller novels, particularly any Sherlock Holmes book I could lay my hands on. However, our school library didn’t offer a wide variety of genres, and there were few, if any, recent releases. Strangely enough, it never occurred to my seventh-grade self that you could simply buy fiction books from bookstores. Nonetheless, my dedication to reading was somewhat lacking, and I got swept up in the whirlwind of studies, exams, and entrance preparations. (Although I did manage to read a few nonfiction and self-help books.)

Fast forward to 2019, a shift occurred when a friend introduced me to an app where I could read books for free on my phone. How could I resist? With my entrance exams behind me and less academic pressure, I suddenly had ample free time to indulge in my newfound passion.

I was ecstatic to rekindle my reading habit, and I decided to explore contemporary literature for the first time. I also dabbled in historical fiction and mysteries. My interest in reading was reignited, and this time, I was determined not to let it slip away. I started collecting physical books, eBooks, and anything I could get my hands on. Reading brought me joy and introduced a much-needed balance to my life. It was during this period that I realized how much I had missed reading, and from then on, I just couldn’t stop picking up books. (I still can’t!)

Reading became an integral part of my daily routine and a way to unwind after a stressful day. Books provided me with something to look forward to at the end of a hectic day. During the pandemic, I explored every genre, and that’s when I stumbled upon the world of fantasy—oh, what a discovery! Why had I not explored this genre before? I realized I had been missing out on countless beautiful adventures and stories.

In 2020, a year filled with challenges for everyone, books, especially those in the fantasy genre, became my escape. Learning about strong, empowering female characters was incredibly refreshing. It infused me with strength and helped me navigate tough times. I often found myself wondering what a particular book character would do if faced with my challenges, providing me with valuable insights. In a way, reading made me wiser, and it seemed to unlock new connections in my brain. (I can’t quite put it any other way.)

I never imagined that reading could transport me to so many different worlds, each meticulously crafted with rich detail. It also broadened my perspective on different cultures, races, and sexualities. I’ve become much more open-minded than I used to be. Things that once seemed strange to me are now more understandable.

Reading books has channeled my thought process in the right direction. I’ve always been a thinker, but now my thoughts flow more smoothly and coherently.

Dabbling in various genres has also improved my grammar and writing skills (wink).

If you aspire to be a good writer, my advice is simple: read. It not only enhances your writing but is also an enjoyable endeavor. I believe that anyone can become a reader; you just need to commit to it and find the genre or book that resonates with you. You don’t have to read thousands of books to be a reader; you just need to connect, absorb, and learn from what you read. Remember that phrase “find your calling”? Well, it applies to reading too. Find that book or genre that speaks to you. It may take time, but with perseverance, you’ll find your place in the world of literature.

In conclusion, books have become lifelong companions for me (yes, it sounds cheesy, but it’s true!).

I find solace in reading, and it constantly helps me learn and grow, boosting my confidence to face life’s challenges. The more I read, the more inspired I am to evolve as an individual. Every time I read, whether it’s about people, their cultures, life, spirituality, or love and relationships—especially in the realm of fiction—I discover something new. Don’t even get me started on nonfiction; it’s a whole different avenue of learning.

One of the most beautiful feelings is when I can relate to a character’s struggles in a book and unexpectedly find answers to my own life’s dilemmas through that connection.

I believe this is a feeling everyone should experience.

So, have books as your companions, and you’ll never feel alone.
